Millions of Black Americans speak a version English not reflected in the American education system. This English—African Vernacular English—is rule-governed, oral, and systematically different from “standard” form (referred to as Mainstream hereon) used academic spaces. Though many young students enter system knowing African English, classroom instruction occurs English. are instructed language that is radically one they use at home yet expected perform levels similar those who already mainstream expectation contributes achievement gap, wherein students, on average, lower than white evaluations education.
 research, community-centered attempt examine differences literacy rates between America, seeks address gap two West Philadelphia elementary schools by leveraging University Pennsylvania’s resources. paper describes my problem-solving learning using Penn Reading Initiative vehicle for change order support students’ cultural sociolinguistic backgrounds classroom, ideally improving through culturally responsive pedagogy. article lays out problem dialectical miscomprehension details solution developed alongside community members Philadelphia. also reflects progress made years since original research took place.
